What to Expect During a Professional Dental Cleaning

For plenty of folks, walking into a dental office feels a little nerve-wracking. Maybe you haven’t been in a while. Maybe you’re not sure what actually happens during a cleaning. Or maybe you just like knowing what’s coming next.

That’s totally normal. And we’re here to walk you through exactly what happens during a professional dental cleaning at our Hyde Park office. No surprises. No mystery. Just a clear, friendly explanation of what you can expect.

What to Expect During a Professional Dental Cleaning in Tampa, FL

Before We Start: The Welcome

When you arrive, our front desk team will greet you and get you checked in. If you’re a new patient, we’ll ask you to fill out some paperwork about your medical history and any medications you take. If you’re a returning patient, we’ll quickly confirm that nothing has changed.

Then one of our hygienists will bring you back to the treatment room. They’ll ask you about any concerns you’ve been having: pain, sensitivity, bleeding gums, or anything else that’s on your mind. This is your time to speak up. We really do want to know what’s going on with your smile.

Step One: The Oral Exam

Before we pick up any instruments, your hygienist will take a good look inside your mouth. They’ll use a small mirror to check your gums, tongue, cheeks, and the roof of your mouth for any signs of trouble. This includes a quick screening for oral cancer, which we take very seriously.

If it’s been a while since we’ve seen you, or if you’re a new patient, we’ll likely take X-rays too. Those help us spot cavities between teeth, check bone levels, and see what’s happening below the gumline. Don’t worry. Modern digital X-rays use very low radiation and are completely safe.

Step Two: Removing Plaque and Tartar

Using a small, curved tool called a scaler, your hygienist will carefully remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. You’ll hear some scraping sounds. That’s totally normal.

Plaque is that soft, sticky film of bacteria that builds up on your teeth every day. When it hardens, it turns into tartar, and you can’t brush that off at home. Only a professional cleaning can remove it. Your hygienist will work along your gumline and between your teeth to clean everything.

If you have some tartar buildup, this part might take a little longer. And if your gums are sensitive or inflamed, you might feel some discomfort. Let your hygienist know if you need a break. We’re here to make you comfortable.

Step Three: The Polishing

Once your teeth are tartar-free, we’ll switch to a high-powered electric brush with a rubber cup on the end. We’ll apply a slightly gritty toothpaste and polish your teeth. This removes any remaining plaque and smooths the surface of your teeth, making it harder for new plaque to stick.

The polish has a mild flavor, usually mint or something similar, and it leaves your teeth feeling incredibly smooth and clean.

Step Four: Flossing and Rinsing

Next, your hygienist will floss between all your teeth. This gets any leftover debris out and checks for areas where your gums might bleed. If you notice some bleeding, that’s a sign you might need to floss more often at home. We’ll give you some tips if that’s the case.

After flossing, you’ll rinse with water or a fluoride rinse to wash away any remaining residue.

Step Five: The Dentist’s Exam

Finally, Dr. Benedict will come in to take a look. She’ll review your X-rays if we took them, check for any problem areas, and talk with you about your overall oral health. She’ll answer any questions you have and recommend any follow-up care you might need.

Step Six: Next Appointment

Before you leave, we’ll schedule your next cleaning. For most people, that’s in six months. Regular cleanings are the best way to prevent small issues from turning into big ones.
