When people picture braces, they often think of metal brackets and wires. But these days, more and more of our patients are asking about a different option: Invisalign. And one of the most common questions we hear is, “Can clear aligners actually fix my overbite?” The short answer is yes, in many cases. But let’s get into the details so you know what to expect.

What Exactly Is an Overbite?
First, let’s make sure we’re talking about the same thing. An overbite is when your upper front teeth overlap your lower front teeth vertically. A small amount of overlap is normal, about one to two millimeters. But when that overlap is too deep, it’s called a deep bite.
Some people confuse overbite with overjet. Overjet is when the upper teeth stick out horizontally over the lower teeth (sometimes called “buck teeth”). Invisalign could help with both, but they’re different conditions. For this post, we’re focusing on the vertical overlap.
How Invisalign Corrects an Overbite
Invisalign isn’t just for straightening crooked teeth anymore. The technology has come a long way. Today’s aligners use something called “smartforce attachments” and rubber band features that help move teeth in ways that weren’t possible a decade ago.
To fix an overbite, we need to do one of two things (or sometimes both). We can either push the upper front teeth up and back, or we can bring the lower front teeth forward. In more complex cases, we might even need to slightly intrude the back teeth to allow the front bite to open up.
Your aligners are custom-designed to apply gentle pressure in specific directions. Over time, that pressure guides your teeth into a healthier position. You’ll switch to a new set of aligners every week or two, and each set moves you a little closer to your goal.
Are You a Good Candidate?
This is where a real exam matters. We can’t tell you for sure without looking at your teeth, your bite, and your jaw alignment. But here are some general guidelines.
Mild to moderate overbites usually respond very well to Invisalign. If your overbite is severe, meaning your upper teeth almost completely cover your lower teeth when you bite down, traditional braces or other orthodontic options might work better.
Age also plays a role. Invisalign works great for teens and adults alike, but younger patients whose jaws are still growing sometimes need a different approach. That’s something we’ll talk about during your consultation.
The most important factor is compliance. Invisalign only works if you wear your aligners. We recommend 20 to 22 hours per day, taking them out only to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush your teeth. If you’re someone who might forget to put them back in, traditional braces could be a better fit.
How Long Does Treatment Take?
Every smile is different, so there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. But for most of our patients with an overbite, treatment takes anywhere from 12 to 24 months. That might sound like a long time, but remember: you’ll be wearing clear, removable aligners that most people won’t even notice.
We’ll check your progress at regular appointments here in our Hyde Park office. And because we’ve been serving the Tampa community since 1963, we’ve seen just about every kind of bite imaginable. You’re in experienced hands.
What About Retention?
Once your overbite is corrected, you’re not done. Your teeth will want to shift back to their old positions. That’s just how teeth are. So we’ll set you up with retainers to wear at night to keep your new smile in place.
