Opalescence, known for its teeth whitening take-home gel and prefilled disposable trays, has come up with an in-office teeth bleaching option called Opalescence Boost Whitening system. Formulated by Ultradent Inc., Opalescence Boost is a chemically activated whitening treatment that can be applied by your dentist right in the dental hospital. This treatment offers results in an hour as its prescription-strength formula is stronger than many over-the-counter whitening products. The 40% hydrogen peroxide gel is chemically activated and hence, doesn't require hot, uncomfortable light to work.

Opalescence Boost is considered an alternative, conservative method for treating discolored teeth, which may be caused by intrinsic factors, including dental fluorosis, tetracycline, and trauma.

One main advantage of Opalescence's in-office system and other whitening systems is its chemically-activated gel that eliminates the use of dental lasers or lights usually used to activate the process. Since no heat or ultraviolet rays are used, even patients with a dry mouth or sensitive teeth can use this.

Advantages of Opalescence Boost Whitening System

  • No light is needed as it is chemically activated.
  • Powerful 40% hydrogen peroxide gel that offers instant results
  • Contains PF (potassium nitrate and fluoride)
  • Fresh chemical for each application
  • Precise results
  • Perfectly Balanced pH
  • Can be used to treat one or more teeth
  • Two to three 20-minute applications
  • No refrigeration required before mixing

How Boost Whitening Works

Your dentist activates opalescence Boost just before its application with a syringe-to-syringe mixing system that keeps the formula fresh and ensures maximum strength.

Opalescence Boost comprises two syringes, one contains 38% Hydrogen Peroxide, and the other contains Fluoride and Potassium Nitrate. Hydrogen Peroxide is the active tooth whitening ingredient, whereas Fluoride and Potassium Nitrate strengthen tooth enamel, protect against cavities, and reduce sensitivity. The mixture of these gels results in a distinct red color that ensures correct placement and full removal of the product.

The Boost Whitening Process

To maximize results, it is advisable to remove calculus and extrinsic stains with a dental cleaning before the treatment. It's also recommended to opt for the treatment before placing dental crowns or veneers as dental restorations can't be bleached.

The treatment time for Boost whitening is approximately 1-2 hours, including preparation:

  • The dentist will pull back your gums, and a tongue protector will be placed.
  • Saliva will be removed by suction, and your teeth will be air-dried.
  • The OpalDam® will be applied to protect gums.
  • The dentist will mix the two gels and place them on your teeth' outer surface with an occasional stir in between.
  • The gel will be suctioned away after 15 minutes, your mouth will be rinsed, and the process will be repeated.

Opalescence Boost whitening treatment typically needs three to four applications. After each application session, your dentist will check your teeth shade level to determine whether another application is necessary. There will be an additional treatment after three days if extra whitening is needed, and no sensitivity is reported.

Opalescence Boost whitening can be combined with a take-home whitening kit to maximize results. Opalescence also offers various after-care dental products, including toothpaste, toothbrushes, and toothpicks.
